Australian Capital Territory
an Australian federal territory, created in 1911 as an enclave within south-eastern NSW; contains Canberra, the country's capital city; its courts have legal jurisdiction also in the Jervis Bay Territory. 2330 km2. Abbrev.: ACT
The area now known as the Australian Capital Territory lies within the traditional territory of the Ngunnawal and Ngarigo peoples. European exploration and settlement date from the 1820s. Upon Federation, both Melbourne and Sydney vied for selection as the nation's capital. As a compromise, the Constitution provided for a new capital city to be built in territory taken from NSW but located at least 100 miles (160 kilometres) from Sydney. After a number of sites were considered, the present location was chosen in 1908, together with territory at Jervis Bay to provide access to the sea. Initially known as the Federal Capital Territory, it was formally named the Australian Capital Territory in 1938. The ACT is governed by a ministry headed by a chief minister and has a legislative assembly that has all state and local government functions, although its decisions can be overruled by the federal government. See also Canberra; Jervis Bay Territory.
